Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting uses worms to turn organic wastes into very high quality compost. The worms eat the decomposing waste and other microorganisms. This passes through their gizzard where it is finely ground, then further decomposed in their digestive system, and exits the worm as a cast.
As worms burrow and tunnel for food, they mix and aerate the decomposing waste, enabling water, nutrients (including their casts), oxygen and microbes to move through it. This process increases the surface area of organic matter that the microorganisms can act on, thereby drastically increasing microbial activity and further decomposition. The end result is called vermicompost. It’s amazing and it’s free.
